Chicago Makes the (wrong) Cut

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

As Eric & Atif stack their 6 thousandth mile in the city of both the shadiest man in America (R. Kelly) & the most admirable (Barack Obama), I felt it appropriate to drop a related news bulletin (slash editorial).

Honestly, Chicago's fashion and style has never reached a level enough to pique my interest. This year stands to do no better as Pete Wentz attempts to save the day by launching Chi-town's 4th Annual (only?) Fashion Week. Though the week is entitled "Fashion Focus Chicago" I really hope they don't focus on Pete's own Clandestine Industries clothing line which conveniently launches its Chicago store this week. A visit to their site (www.clandestineindustries.com) quickly uncovers Pete's models rocking logo tees and hoodies with outfits straight outta your local Urban Outfitters.

I can't hate on UO too much, I mean, it has its gems but c'mon. Unfortunately, as much as we kick and scream against more celebrity clothing lines, they are far from over. As long as we have a Nicky Hilton or a Spencer (from the Hills) bored and looking for something to do, there will always be a celebrity clothing line. Every once in a while, amidst everyone biting each other off, a celebrity line worth noting will arise. Nothing comes to mind... but I have faith we'll see a genuinely creative celebrity line soon enough, and it will be sold in one of the respectable Chicago boutiques (i.e. Solemates). Afterall, piracy leads innovation, right?
