FINGERPAINT
I am part of the FINGERPAINT group exhibition that is opening this Wednesday May 28th. It should be a kick ass opening so try to stop by. Information below. The first event from Fingerpaint will be Wednesday May 28th from 7pm - 11pm. It will feature work from 25 emerging photographers and artists, as well a selection of specially donated pieces. Items will be for sale through a silent auction with all proceeds going to benefit Brad Pitt's Make it Right Foundation for the restoration of the 9th Ward district in New Orleans. Held at the historic former Dia Gallery's 10,000 sq foot space on West 22nd street, the event will be an amazing showcase of emerging talent from across America for a great cause. Fingerpaint seeks to facilitate the exposure of talented young artists, through ad hoc art events at high-end galleries in New York City. Each show is followed by a silent auction, from which all proceeds go towards the Make It Right Foundation, building green affordable housing for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The title 'Fingerpaint' evokes the do-it-yourself mentality often associated with youth culture, the childish impertinence of us 'sneaking in' to these high-end galleries, and the firm belief that our passions can be harnessed to benefit the lives of future generations. This one's for the kids!
A few friends from grad school and I have started a not-for-profit organization called A Chance for Every Child and we are hosting our first fundraiser today. It's short notice but drop by if you can, you'll be helping a great cause. Our first project is in Sierra Leone, where there are only 3 pediatricians in the whole nation and a child has the lowest chance in the world of surviving until the age of 5. Sometimes a kid has other things on his mind than what's poppin in the fashion world, ya dig? Behind the Curtain Photos
Armen's show was a great success. Though the photographs varied in style they all came together in an elegant way once on the walls. The room was filled with positive energy and part of the reason was because Armen was able to bring so many different types of people together... there were people from my high school, Tisch heads, street heads, fashionistas, Russian ballet dancers, old, young, lame, cool, seemed like everyone was represented. Here are a couple of photos, more in the gallery. CLICK HERE FOR MORE IMAGESLabels: Events, Photography
Museum Raps
Its hard to think of an age-old institution of science and research as capable of putting on a "cool" event that outshines many young, edgy, trendy organizations' attempts at entertainment. Fortunately this is NYC. This weekend I had the opportunity to attend the American Museum of Natural History not for its exhibits, but rather for a crazy hip-hop show featuring The Cool Kids, Kid Sister & DJ A-Trak (Kanye West's official DJ). It went down on the main floor of the planetarium, so it was basically a ton of people drinking, dancing, going nuts right there among exhibits like a scale model of our galaxy and a 15-ton meteorite. It was a perfect example of why I love this town and its variety of backdrops for art and creativity. The Cool Kids & Kid Sister joking about tight jeans Kid Sister & A-Trak A-TrakHighlights include dancing with A-Traks mom, Kid Sister crowd surfing in a dress, and a surprise appearance by Kanye West himself during Kid Sister's "Pro Nails" before hanging around to perform 4 of his songs in a huge fur coat! Diamond Matters
I didn't get a chance to post the opening of this exhibition but right now Kadir van Lohuizen has a show up in Dumbo called Diamond Matters. It has to be the best exhibition I have seen since Salgado at ICP. The images were incredible at telling the story and he did a great job following the entire process. It felt like I was looking at the lifespan of a diamond that had been found and is now in someones earrings. The following are details Umbrage Gallery 81 Front Street Brooklyn Oct 30th to Dec 4th. Its up for a while and I urge you to check it out. Umbrage did a great job publishing Kadirs Book. It's elegantly printed in tritone on 3 different papers, from rough to glossy, mirroring the evolution of the raw diamond to their apogee as Bond Street tiaras. The packaging is on point, hardbound with a suede spine and small diamond on the cover. Labels: Events, Photography
Scourge
Showing at 8pm tonight, Friday June 8th, and tomorrow, Saturday June 9th, Scourge, by Marc Bamuthi Joseph, is a "powerful, political and revolutionary look at Haiti in its 200th year as a sovereign nation." Co-written by our girl Chinaka Hodge, one of the illest and most gifted poet and writer that I have had the pleasure of knowing, the performance "adeptly fuses Hip-Hop, poetry and live music to explore the narrow space between history, myth, and speculation." So, if you're in the area and looking for something fresh and interesting, show some love and check it out. Full details and link below. Scourge by Marc Bamuthi Joseph with Chinaka Hodge and Dahlak Brathwaite Friday June 8 & Saturday June 9, 2007 :: 8 PM Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts One University Place, Long Island University Brooklyn, NY Tickets: $20 regular / $15 students w/ID www.kumbletheater.tix.com / 718 488 1624 Labels: Events

Boxed Up
Last Friday, we went to the Want 2B Square Art Installation, held downtown at the Skylight Studios. The event was put on as a cross promotional marketing event by Scion, in which the Installation consisted of a series of suspended cubes that were open at the bottom so the viewer could stick his or her head into it and see a 3-D panoramic piece of art. Each artist was commissioned to do a larger, 48"X48" and a smaller 24"X24" installation cube, and at the end of the night, the cubes were disassembled and each panel could be bought as a separate piece of art. The idea was that the cubes were supposed to reference the boxy, cube like appearance of the Scion Xb. Honestly, if corporations can keep giving us events like these, I'm all for it. Some artists and designers get on the high and mighty tip with their work, but everybody's gotta pay the bills, and if you can do so by doing what you love without compromising the integrity of your work, more props to you. Art and commerce have always coexisted in precarious relationship of cat and mouse. Play the game or it plays you. Dalek, Steve Vaughn, Maya Hayuk and Matzu MTP have some super ill styles, and I love seeing their work whenever I have a chance. We also got a chance to catch a live piece by Duflux, and the free booze never hurts. All in all, the event was pretty dope for what it was. Scion, if you're listening, it sure as hell beat any of your TV spots, but i still don't know if I would buy an Xb, that shit is kinda ugly, no matter how you want to spin it...
