YOU MUST CREATE

Thursday, April 03, 2008

A part of being a creative person simply boils down to the sheer mental satisfaction of putting in time and effort for a project, and then having a real and tangible piece of work to show for your efforts, whether it's a tee, garment, jewelry piece, or otherwise.

Instant gratification can't be overrated.

On a psychological level, I'm sure that most people sitting at a desk job get frustrated for the fact that there is really very little to show for their personal contributions and hard work.

What I have found over time is that making shit makes me happy. Creation is powerful, no matter on what level. Take my desk. [As you can tell, I sprang for the super luxe Staples joint, dropping $90 for the whole shebang delivered to BK]. This is what the box and shit looked like.

It looked like, well, shit in a box.

Building this bitch was not as easy as those Staples commercials make it seem, with that deceptive, red "Easy" button of theirs. Anyways, after assembling the various panels, poles, and dowels with Machine, Wood, and Cam Screws, the finished product might have been less than spectacular, but hell, it was a finished product.

Needless to say, this was the best part of the instructions.....

Spring 2008 Jewelry Collection

Friday, March 07, 2008

Pirates have shaped our modern cultural landscape more than any other figure. Be it pirating illegal music and software, to bootlegging media or straight knocking off luxury brand goods, pirates and hackers have been at the center of cultural debate.

Taking this ethos, from the depths of a New York workshop, Vane has discovered a treasure of buried vintage chains. Stolen from eras past, they revived 5 styles of chain, and complemented the collection with an original pendant and tee shirts.

Keeping in line with the concept of old fashioned local craftsmanship made relevant again, Vane has updated vintage chain to make fresh and new what once was lost.

Click here to view and shop full collection.

I wanted to thank MissB and Youssef for doing a kick ass job in front of the camera. You guys ROCK for getting through the shoot that I decided to have on the roof on what seemed like the coldest day all year!

Linked Up

Monday, January 21, 2008

Here's just a peek in our jeweler's workshop, Christine, who handles the casting and finishing for our jewelry. Not only is she super chill and fun to work with, but the woman knows her shit. She has been doing her thing for a minute now, and her client list reads like the credits of Vogue, crafting custom pieces for the likes of Jill Sanders, Oscar de la Renta, and Giorgio Armani.

Needless to say, after working with some of the illest high profile clients, you tend to accumulate a bunch of cool shit. A visit to Christine is more like treasure hunting or vintage shopping, as she is kind enough to let us rummage through piles of her old and vintage chain pieces, in search of a few gems. All I have to say is be on the look out for real ill vintage chains, we're always trying to think out of the box and bring you some freshness, even when fresh is old, ya dig?

The Holiday Grind

Sunday, January 06, 2008

Holidays usually mean a time of relaxation and reflection, to catch up with family and take a breather from the stress of work. Well, when you run your own business, unfortunately that stress never goes away. So, while everyone was enjoying their eggnog and such, I was on the grind out in Vegas (work and pleasure for sure, ha!) and in LA, shopping the new Spring Line and trying to open accounts. The biggest obstacle while I was out West was my lack of a vehicle. LA and Vegas aren't exactly known for their public transportation.....

While I was out in the City of Sin, I had to see Fruition, which has gotten a whole bunch of press for it's celebrity clientele (namely Mr. West). The spot was super fresh, and Samantha, the owner/partner, and her sales crew were really cool and kind enough to chop it up with me for a minute about what they're trying to do on the hip-hop-inspired vintage tip. With all the homages in the street scene to 80's and early 90's hip-hop, it was refreshing to see someone out there actively finding and curating an entire vintage collection from these eras. Sometimes old can be new, ya dig? I felt that there were a lot parallels in what they were doing in terms of bring back items that were authentic and old-school to what we are trying to do with the old-school production style that we have been trying to cultivate.

Also I gotta give some shouts to Cyndy and Rico over at Cloth and Canvas for the love they showed to me and the line. I wish them the best of luck as their store continues to grow.

When I made it back to LA, I got to see the fam and enjoy the non-frigid weather of sunny Southern Cal, but stayed on the grind, where I spent two days on the road dropping off line sheets and showing samples. I got to sit down with Corey who owns a small boutique called Rescue out in Silverlake, which is an emerging area near Los Angeles (think an LA version of Williamsburg or the LES as the artists and hipsters started to occupy the area and you get the idea of what's happening there.) Luxury spots will be soon to follow, promise. One thing I definitely don't miss about LA is the commuting, the endless driving back and forth all over the damn place. I couldn't wait just to jump in the street and hail a cab or grab a train to dinner. But, the best part was that I made all my sales calls middle-school style, as my moms drove me from place to place since I no longer have a vehicle or any insurance (thanks Ma!).

But all in all, the trip was definitely positive, as I learned a bunch and got to meet some super cool boutique owners, and peep the fashion and street scene emerging in Silverlake and Vegas, where cats are definitely doing their thing. But, no rest now, this is just a sliver of the work still to be done and places needed to visit. Next up, Boston, DC, and Philly!

Folk & Stress Interview

Monday, April 16, 2007

The post before this mentioned that Vane will be producing a lot more video content. This interview is first of many to come...

Folk & Stress
A pair of New York native sons hailing from LI, these boys hope to uphold the long tradition of the New York Emcees that have both lyrical credibility as well musical accessibility. The Vane Crew sat down with the two of them at their crib and make-shift recording studio in Long Island where we talked independent distribution, the division of hip-hop, Jethro Tull, and white rappers not on VH1. Enjoy!
